Who we are
Shane Bateman, DVM, MSc, DVSc, DACVECC is committed to advancing the field of veterinary forensic science by applying over 20 years of experience in clinical practice and animal welfare to the intersection of veterinary medicine and legal investigations. He earned a Master’s degree in Veterinary Forensic Science from the University of Florida in 2022 and has since focused on expanding the role of forensics in veterinary education. At the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC), Dr. Bateman has developed a week-long elective rotation in veterinary forensics, ensuring that future veterinarians are equipped to handle the growing need for forensic expertise in cases involving animal cruelty, neglect, and legal disputes. He is a member of the International Veterinary Forensic Sciences Association and the International Society for Animal Forensic Sciences.
Dr. Bateman has had a distinguished career in emergency and critical care. As an Associate Professor at OVC, he works as an Emergency and Critical Care specialist within the Companion Animal Medical Complex. His clinical practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening conditions in companion animals, where he is known for his calm, methodical approach in high-pressure situations.
Dr. Bateman was also deeply involved in community veterinary care and animal welfare initiatives. From 2011 to 2021, he served as the Chair of the Board for the Guelph Humane Society, guiding the organization through a successful $10 million capital campaign and the construction of a new shelter. During this time, he also served as Regional Veterinary Director for Community Veterinary Outreach, a charity providing free preventive veterinary care for the pets of individuals experiencing homelessness. His work extended to underserved populations, including providing low-cost preventive care to First Nations communities in Southwestern Ontario.
Dr. Bateman's commitment to the welfare of animals and their owners inspired the creation of the Kim & Stu Lang Community Healthcare Partnership Program in 2019, supported by an $11 million donation to OVC. This program reflects his vision of combining veterinary care with community outreach to support vulnerable animal populations and improve access to veterinary services.
